Snow Pounce

This is one of Richard's most well know images, and his first awarded in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year, in the mammal behaviour category. This comical image captures the moment a red fox almost leaps clean out of the frame, as it attempts to catch a rodent under the snowy landscape, in Yellowstone National Park. The fox had made its way across a frozen field before vanishing behind a snow bank. Frustrated, Richard was about to give up and move on, before it suddenly reappeared along the edge of the road. He barely had time to drive forward and get the camera out of the window, before the fox leaped clean in the air to dive down into the deep snow below.
